The Greek word for “gifts” is the word “charisma” [khar'-is-mah], which means “a gift of divine grace; grace or gifts denoting extraordinary powers; freely and graciously given by God.” These gifts that 1 Corinthians 12 speaks of are freely given to you by God, your loving Father.

One important thing about the Charismatic Renewal is that it embraces the belief that the Holy Spirit still gives these gifts to manifest His presence and power. Many Christians feel the gifts were given only in the early days of the New Testament, to help the apostles accomplish their important work of establishing the Church. They do not believe, however, that these gifts are still in existence or necessary today. Can we look at the present situation and feel that the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are not needed? We live in a world where sin and immorality are acceptable, where the teaching and divinity of Jesus are constantly being rejected even by some churches and where Christians are persecuted for their faith.
It seems far more appropriate to thank God that He continues to grant the charismatic gifts to those who desire to serve Him, the Church, the body of Christ and the entire world. He is still empowering those who love Him to accomplish tasks which are far beyond their human powers and abilities.

“The apostle declares, ‘We speak wisdom among those who are perfect’ [ 1 Cor 2:6 ]. He terms those perfect who have received the Spirit of God, and who through the Spirit speak in all languages, as he himself used to speak. Similarly, we also hear many brothers in the Church who possess prophetic gifts and who through the Spirit speak all kinds of languages.
They bring to light the hidden things of men for the general benefit and declare the mysteries of God. These the apostle terms spiritual. They are spiritual because they partake of the Spirit, not because their flesh is stripped off and taken away and they have become purely spiritual [as the
Gnostics teach]. (Against Heresies V:6:1)

Quote on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, www.Christian-History.org, Saint Irenaeus, 2nd Century AD – c. 202

“Spurgeon exercised the gift of prophecy. He did not label it as such, but that does not alter the reality of what the Holy Spirit accomplished
through him. If one were to examine Spurgeon’s theology and ministry, as well as recorded accounts of it by his contemporaries as well as subsequent biographers, most would conclude from the absence of explicit reference to miraculous charismata such as prophecy and the word of knowledge that such gifts had been withdrawn from church life. But Spurgeon’s own testimony inadvertently says otherwise!”

4 “Gifts in Church History,” www.EnjoyingGodMinistries.com section 4, final paragraph, Sam Storms’ quote on Charles Haddon Spurgeon

1 Corinthians 14:1-4
EAGERLY PURSUE and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim,
your great quest]; and earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual
endowments (gifts), especially that you may prophesy (interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching). For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding]. But [on the other hand], the one who prophesies [who interprets the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching] speaks to men for their up-building and constructive spiritual progress and encouragement and consolation. He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness, and happiness].

1 Corinthians 14:1-4, The Amplified Bible
Read the Amplified Bible in context

1 Corinthians 14:1-5 Be constantly pursuing this love, earnestly endeavoring to acquire it. Moreover, be earnestly desiring the spiritual gifts, and do this in order that you might more efficiently impart to others the divine revelations you have received. For the one who is uttering words in a tongue [a language not understood except through an interpreter] is not speaking to men but to God, for no one hears him so as to understand what he is saying. And he utters with his human spirit [as energized by the Holy Spirit] divine revelations not explained. But he who imparts divine revelations to men is speaking with the result of up building the Christian life, and exhortation, and consolation. The one who utters words in a tongue builds himself up in his Christian life. But he who imparts divine revelations to others builds up the local assembly. Now I desire that all of you be speaking in tongues, but I prefer that you impart divine revelations to others which you have received. Moreover, greater is the one who imparts divine revelations to others than he who speaks in tongues, with this exception—that he interpret, in order that the local assembly might receive up building.

.
The Greek word for “teach” is “didasko” [dee-das-koe], meaning “to
impart instruction, instill doctrine, explain or expound, or hold a
discourse.” This definition gives a wonderful clue into who the
Spirit is, and what He does. Just as Jesus was always with His
disciples and on-goingly taught them, so the Spirit is with you and
teaches you [1]

Here are some additional readings for you as you are taught by the
Spirit:

“But root and fruit are ever connected by a stem to their branches
and leaves. In the life of Christ this was so, too. The connection
between His hidden life rooted in God, and that life manifesting
itself in the fruit of holy words and works, was maintained by His
life of conscious and continual personal fellowship with the Father.
In His waiting on the Father, to see and hear what He had to make
known, in His yielding Himself to the leadings of the Spirit, in His
submission to the teachings of the Word that He came to fulfill, in
His watching unto prayer, and in His whole life of dependence and
faith, Christ became our Example.”

1 Full Life In Christ, Andrew Murray, Whitaker House, 2000, p. 237

“Peter prophesied on the day of Pentecost when he spoke the
brilliant message that brought thousands into the kingdom. He
proclaimed the Word of God without any preparation or previous
study; it was spoken by inspiration…This same thing happens to
every person who gets filled with the Spirit of God. The Teacher
comes to live in us, and the things of God become clearer.”
2

2 Drawing Near, John Bevere, Thomas Nelson, 2004, p. 167

“There is no college for holy education like that of the blessed
Spirit, for He is an ever-present tutor, to whom we have only to
bend the knee, and He is at our side, the great expositor of truth.

But there is one thing about the suitability of this guide which is
remarkable. I do not know whether it has struck you—the Holy
Spirit can "guide us into a truth." Now, man can guide us to a truth,
but it is only the Holy Spirit who can "guide us into a truth."
"When He, the Spirit of truth, shall come, He shall guide you
into"—mark that word—"all truth."

Now, for instance, it is a long while before you can lead some people to election; but when you have made them see its correctness, you have not led them “into” it. You may show them that it is plainly stated in Scripture, but they will turn away and hate it. You take them to another great truth, but they have been brought up in a different fashion, and though they cannot answer your arguments, they say, “The man is right, perhaps,” and they whisper—but so low that conscience itself cannot hear—“but it is so contrary to my prejudices, that I cannot receive it.” After you have led them to the truth, and they see it is true, how hard it is to lead them into it! There are many of my hearers who are brought to the truth of their depravity, but they are not brought into it, and made to feel it. Some of you are brought to know the truth that God keeps us from day to day; but you rarely get into it, so as to live in continual dependence upon God the Holy Ghost, and draw fresh supplies from him. The thing is—to get inside it.

A Christian should do with
truth as a snail does with his shell—live inside it, as well as carry it
on his back, and bear it perpetually about with him. The Holy
Ghost, it is said, shall lead us into all truth. You may be brought to
a chamber where there is an abundance of gold and silver, but you
will be no richer unless you effect an entrance. It is the Spirit's
work to unbar the two leaved gates, and bring us into a truth, so
that we may get inside it, and, as dear old Rowland Hill said, "Not
only hold the truth, but have the truth hold us."

John 14:26
But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate,
Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send
in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf],
He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will
remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told
you.”
